A newborn essentials checklist

What most families find useful in the first weeks, and what can happily wait, so you can prepare without the overwhelm.

Preparing for a baby can feel like a hundred decisions at once. This list is a gentle starting point, not a rulebook: every family is different, and you will learn what you need as you go.

Clothing

  • A handful of soft onesies and sleep suits in breathable cotton
  • Two or three light blankets or swaddles
  • Soft hats and mittens, if the weather calls for them
  • Something loose to travel home in

Choose smooth seams and easy fastenings. You will be changing clothes more often than you expect, often half asleep.

Sleep

  • A firm, flat mattress that fits the bed properly
  • Fitted sheets, with spares for the inevitable night-time change
  • A small night light, for feeds without turning on the big light

For anything about how your baby should sleep, please follow your doctor's advice.

Feeding

  • Muslin cloths and soft bibs
  • Bottles and a way to clean them, if you plan to use them
  • A comfortable chair for you

Bath and care

  • A baby bath or a clean basin
  • Soft towels with a hood
  • Gentle, fragrance-free products, if your doctor suggests any
  • Nappies and soft wipes

Out and about

  • A carrier or a pram that suits your home and your streets
  • A bag that holds spare clothes, nappies and a cloth

What can wait

Plenty of things look essential and are not. Many families wait on a lot of toys, a large wardrobe in one size, and special equipment, until they see what their baby actually likes. Babies grow quickly, so buy small amounts first.

One last thought

The most useful thing in the first weeks is usually rest, and people who help. If you would like to see our gentle essentials in one place, visit the shop, or ask us anything and a real person will reply.

This article is general guidance, not medical advice. For anything about your child's health, please speak to your doctor.
