How to choose a safe bed guard

A calm checklist for choosing a bed guard: fit, fabric, fixing and the small checks worth making every day.

A bed guard is a quiet piece of nursery furniture, and it earns its place only if it is chosen carefully. Here is how we think about it, in the order we would check things ourselves.

Start with the bed, not the guard

Measure the length and height of the bed or mattress before you look at anything else. A guard should sit snugly along the edge, with no gap between the guard and the mattress. A guard that is too short leaves an opening, and one that is too tall can be awkward to reach over.

What to look for

  • A snug, stable fit. Press along the guard. It should not slide, tip or sag.
  • Breathable fabric. Soft cotton that lets air through is more comfortable, and it is gentler on tender skin.
  • A cover that comes off. Babies make a lot of laundry. A removable, washable cover keeps things fresh without much effort.
  • Secure fixing. Look for sturdy ties or straps, and check that they cannot be reached or pulled loose by little hands.
  • Clean finishing. Smooth seams, no loose threads, no small parts that could come away.

Read the age guidance

Every product page on our shop shows age guidance and safety notes. Please read them before you buy and again before you use the product. If you are unsure whether a bed guard suits your baby's age, ask your doctor or health visitor, and always follow their advice about safe sleep for newborns.

A short daily check

Once the guard is in place, it takes ten seconds to look it over each day:

  1. Is it still snug against the mattress?
  2. Are the ties or straps secure?
  3. Is the fabric clean, dry and undamaged?

The best bed guard is the one that fits your bed properly and that you check without having to think about it.

Washing and care

Follow the care label. Wash the cover gently, let it dry fully, and check the fit again when you put it back. Padding that has lost its shape is a sign it is time to replace the guard.
